Over 11,000 Tourists Visit Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in Fiscal Year 2081/82

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, one of Nepal’s most important wetland ecosystems and wildlife destinations, has welcomed more than 11,000 visitors during the current fiscal year 2081/82 BS.

According to Reserve Chief and Senior Conservation Officer Bhupendra Prasad Yadav, the reserve recorded a total of 11,603 visitors. Among them were 11,214 domestic tourists, 87 visitors from SAARC countries, and 302 international tourists from other foreign nations.

Located across Sunsari and Saptari districts in eastern Nepal, the reserve lies along the island floodplains formed by the mighty Saptakoshi River. Koshi Tappu is widely recognized for protecting Nepal’s last remaining population of endangered wild water buffaloes, locally known as Arna.

The reserve covers an area of 348 square kilometres, including a 173-square-kilometre buffer zone. It is the only wildlife reserve in Nepal and provides an important habitat for several rare and endangered species, including gharial and mugger crocodiles, Gangetic dolphins, and numerous native fish species.

Koshi Tappu is also internationally significant for its wetland ecosystem. The area has been listed under the Ramsar Convention since 1987, recognizing it as a wetland of global importance. Conservation experts also consider the reserve a vital biological corridor connected to eastern India, supporting migratory birds and diverse wildlife movement.

Officials say the reserve reflects the rich biodiversity and unique forest ecosystem of Nepal’s eastern Tarai and Madhesh regions, making it a growing destination for nature lovers, birdwatchers, wildlife photographers, and eco-tourism enthusiasts.

With increasing domestic tourism and rising international interest, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Nepal’s most valuable natural treasures.
