Experience one of Nepal’s great wilderness rivers on an 8-day Fishing in Karnali River expedition with Adventure Trail Nepal.
The Karnali is Nepal’s longest river and flows through some of the country’s most remote landscapes before reaching the Terai plains. Its combination of deep pools, rocky banks, fast-flowing rapids, forested valleys and remote villages creates an exciting environment for anglers and adventure travelers.
This Fishing in Karnali River expedition is designed for travelers who want to experience the Karnali without committing to a much longer fishing journey. Across several days on the river, you will have opportunities to target Golden Mahseer and Goonch Catfish in suitable pools, runs, eddies and other fishing areas.
Fishing is combined with white-water rafting, riverside camping and remote wilderness exploration. Between fishing sessions, you will travel through dramatic river scenery and navigate sections of moving water with an experienced rafting crew.
Evenings are spent at riverside camps, often on sandy beaches or other suitable camping areas. Far from the busy tourist centers, the quiet surroundings offer a chance to experience the natural character of the Karnali and interact with local communities along the river.
This Fishing in Karnali River adventure is particularly suitable for anglers and outdoor travelers with limited time who want to combine fishing, rafting and wilderness camping in western Nepal.
The Karnali Fishing Experience
The Karnali River offers a very different experience from Nepal’s more established trekking and tourism destinations.
There are no busy trails or large tourist groups along much of the route. Instead, the expedition follows the river through rugged landscapes where the river itself becomes the main route.
Fishing takes place when conditions are suitable, with the guides identifying promising pools, deep bends, eddies and calmer stretches. Depending on local conditions and the participant’s experience, fishing methods may include spinning, baitcasting and other appropriate techniques. Fly fishing can also be considered in suitable sections.
The expedition also includes rafting through sections of moving water. The difficulty of the river varies according to the season and water level, so the rafting team will determine the appropriate route and safety procedures each day.
The combination of fishing + rafting + camping is what makes this journey particularly distinctive. One moment you may be casting beside a deep river pool; later you may be navigating through a fast-flowing section before stopping at a remote river beach for the night.
Your Karnali adventure begins in Kathmandu.
Depending on the selected transportation arrangement, travel by domestic flight toward Surkhet, the gateway to western Nepal’s Karnali region. Upon arrival, meet your expedition team and continue by private 4WD toward Tallo Dungeshwor.
The road journey takes you away from the urban environment and into the hills and valleys of western Nepal. As the landscape changes, you will begin to see the rugged terrain that defines the Karnali region.
After reaching the riverside area, the team will establish camp and conduct a detailed expedition briefing. Your guides will review the fishing program, river safety, equipment and the plan for the following days.
Enjoy your first evening beside the Karnali.
Overnight: Riverside camp
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, begin your first full day on the river.
The morning starts with a safety briefing and preparation for rafting. After entering the river, the expedition combines sections of rafting with fishing opportunities in calmer pools and suitable riverbanks.
Your fishing guides will identify areas where conditions are suitable for targeting Golden Mahseer and other native species.
The pace of the day is determined by river conditions, fishing opportunities and the distance required to reach the next campsite.
By late afternoon, stop at a suitable riverside location and establish camp.
Relax beside the river and enjoy dinner under the open sky.
Overnight: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Today takes you deeper into the Karnali wilderness.
Start the morning with a fishing session before continuing downstream. The river becomes increasingly remote, with dramatic hills, rocky riverbanks and forested slopes surrounding the route.
As the river changes character, the rafting team will guide you through suitable sections of moving water.
Fishing sessions are planned around calmer stretches, deep pools and promising bends. Your guides will assist with identifying suitable casting locations and reading the river.
At the end of the day, find a suitable remote beach or riverbank for camp.
Overnight: Riverside wilderness camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Today combines fishing, rafting and cultural encounters.
Begin with a morning fishing session in suitable pools before continuing downstream.
The route passes remote settlements where traditional rural life continues alongside the river. Depending on the route and conditions, you may see farmers working in fields, local residents travelling between villages or children playing near the river.
The river then becomes the main focus again as you navigate another section of moving water with your rafting team.
The combination of remote villages, rugged hills and the powerful Karnali River provides some of the most memorable scenery of the expedition.
Set up camp beside the river in the evening.
Overnight: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Today is one of the expedition’s main fishing and river-travel days.
After breakfast, continue downstream through a combination of faster and calmer sections.
When the river slows, stop for dedicated fishing sessions. Depending on conditions, anglers can try spinning, baitcasting or other suitable techniques in deeper pools, bends and calmer stretches.
Between fishing sessions, continue rafting through the spectacular river landscape.
The river corridor provides opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife. Otters and other river wildlife may occasionally be seen, although sightings are naturally unpredictable.
As the sun begins to set, stop on a suitable sandy riverbank and establish camp.
Overnight: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Today focuses more heavily on fishing.
After an early breakfast, explore different fishing locations along the river. Your guides will select areas according to water conditions, fish habitat and accessibility.
The day may include fishing around deep bends, pools and side channels before moving to another location.
For anglers, this provides an opportunity to spend more time concentrating on technique rather than travelling continuously.
The surrounding wilderness remains an important part of the experience. Take time to enjoy the river, hills, forest and changing light across the valley.
Continue toward the Chisapani area and establish camp according to the day’s progress.
Overnight: Riverside camp
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Enjoy your final full morning on the Karnali.
Depending on the river conditions and schedule, there may be time for a final fishing session before continuing downstream.
The rafting journey gradually approaches Chisapani, a well-known gateway to the far-western Terai and Bardia region.
After arriving at the take-out area, finish the river portion of your expedition and settle into your accommodation or camp.
In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner and, weather permitting, a final campfire with the expedition team.
Share stories from the river, compare fishing experiences and enjoy your final night in western Nepal.
Overnight: Chisapani
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, leave Chisapani by road and travel toward Nepalgunj Airport.
The drive takes you from the river environment toward the Terai plains. Along the way, the landscape gradually changes from forested hills to flatter lowland terrain.
After reaching Nepalgunj, take your domestic flight back to Kathmandu, subject to the flight schedule.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our representative can transfer you to your hotel or another location as arranged.
