The Bheri River Fishing Expedition is a six-day wilderness journey into the remote landscapes of western Nepal, combining fishing, rafting, camping, and the chance to experience a part of the country that sees relatively few visitors.
The Bheri River flows through rugged hills, forested valleys, sandy riverbanks, and remote settlements before joining the Karnali River. Its clear sections, deep pools, rocky runs, and river confluences provide opportunities to fish for species such as Golden Mahseer, Goonch Catfish, and Snow Trout, depending on the season and river conditions.
The Bheri River Fishing Expedition begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, followed by a private jeep drive to the river. From Mehalkuna, the expedition follows the Bheri downstream by raft, with regular stops at promising fishing pools and confluences. Some sections are spent actively fishing, while others allow you to simply enjoy the river scenery and rafting through the wilderness.
Each evening, camp is set up beside the river, often on a quiet sandy beach. After a day on the water, there is time to relax around the campfire, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner, and take in the peaceful atmosphere of the Bheri Valley.
This Bheri River Fishing expedition is particularly suitable for anglers who want to combine fishing with an authentic wilderness experience rather than spending the entire trip at one fishing location. Fishing is conducted on a catch-and-release basis, supporting responsible angling and conservation.
Fishing Experience
Fishing is an important part of the expedition, but the trip is designed as a complete river adventure rather than a guaranteed trophy-fishing program.
Depending on water levels, season, weather, and fish activity, your guides will identify suitable pools, runs, eddies, and confluences for fishing. Golden Mahseer is one of the main target species, while Goonch Catfish and Snow Trout may also be encountered.
The river crew will help you understand the local conditions and select appropriate fishing locations. Guests may bring their own equipment, while fishing gear can be arranged in advance upon request.
All fishing is conducted on a catch-and-release basis to help protect the river’s fish populations.
Your Bheri River adventure begins with a morning flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. After meeting the expedition team, you continue by private jeep toward Mehalkuna.
The drive takes several hours and gradually leads away from the busy Terai region toward the quieter landscapes of western Nepal. Upon reaching Mehalkuna, you meet the river crew and receive a briefing about the fishing, rafting, camping arrangements, and safety procedures.
If river and weather conditions allow, there may be time for a short fishing session before sunset. Your first evening is spent at a riverside camp, where you can relax and prepare for the days ahead.
Overnight: Riverside Camp, Mehalkuna
Meals: Lunch and Dinner
Begin the morning with a fishing session around the Mehalkuna area, taking advantage of the cooler part of the day when conditions may be suitable for angling.
After breakfast, the expedition continues downstream by raft. The river journey combines gentle stretches with sections of moving water, while the crew identifies suitable places to stop for fishing.
Along the way, you will have opportunities to fish from the riverbanks and around promising pools and confluences. The changing scenery—from forested slopes to open sandy beaches—makes the journey as much about exploration as fishing.
Arrive at Ranighat later in the day and settle into camp. If conditions are favorable, enjoy another fishing session before dinner and a relaxed evening around the campfire.
Overnight: Riverside Camp, Ranighat
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinners
An early morning fishing session gives you another opportunity to explore the pools around Ranighat before the day’s river journey begins.
After breakfast, continue rafting downstream through increasingly remote sections of the Bheri. Fishing stops are made at selected pools and river features where your guides consider conditions suitable.
Golden Mahseer and Goonch Catfish are among the species you may target, although catches depend on water conditions, season, and fish activity.
By afternoon, continue toward Taranga, enjoying the changing river scenery along the way. Your crew sets up camp on a suitable riverside beach, giving you time to relax after the day’s fishing and rafting.
Overnight: Riverside Camp, Taranga
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
After breakfast, the expedition continues downstream toward Jamu. This section provides a combination of rafting, scenic river travel, and fishing opportunities.
Your guides will look for deeper pools, slower-moving water, rocky sections, and confluences where fish may be active. You can spend time fishing from the raft-accessible riverbanks before continuing downstream.
The Bheri becomes increasingly immersive as the road network and regular settlements disappear from view. The surrounding hills, forests, and riverbanks create a genuine wilderness atmosphere.
Arrive at the camping area near Jamu and enjoy a freshly prepared dinner. Depending on the evening conditions, the crew may organize a campfire or riverside BBQ.
Overnight: Riverside Camp, Jamu
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Today takes you toward one of the most significant points of the expedition – the confluence of the Bheri and Karnali rivers.
After breakfast, continue rafting through remote river sections, with fishing opportunities along the way. Your guides will select appropriate areas based on the water level, clarity, weather, and fish activity.
As the Bheri approaches the Karnali, the surrounding landscape changes and the river environment becomes increasingly impressive. Spend time exploring suitable fishing areas around the confluence before returning to camp.
This is also your final full evening on the river, making it a good opportunity to relax with the crew, enjoy dinner beside the water, and reflect on the journey through western Nepal.
Overnight: Riverside Camp near the Bheri–Karnali Confluence
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Wake early for a final fishing session around the confluence. The cooler morning conditions provide one last opportunity to cast your line before breakfast and the final rafting section.
After breakfast, continue downstream toward Chisapani, enjoying the remaining river scenery. The rafting journey takes approximately four hours, depending on river conditions and the day’s operating schedule.
At Chisapani, complete the river section of the expedition and enjoy lunch before beginning the overland journey toward Nepalgunj Airport.
After approximately four hours of driving, arrive at Nepalgunj for your evening flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel or continue with your onward travel arrangements.
Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Responsible Fishing & Travel
The Bheri River is part of a fragile natural environment, and responsible travel is an important part of this expedition. We encourage visitors to respect local communities, avoid unnecessary plastic waste, follow fishing regulations, and leave campsites and riverbanks clean.
Catch-and-release fishing helps reduce pressure on local fish populations, while working with local guides and support crews contributes to communities in remote areas of western Nepal.
The main target species include Golden Mahseer, Goonch Catfish, and Snow Trout. The species you encounter will depend on the season, river section, water conditions, and fish activity.
No. Fishing is a natural activity, and catches cannot be guaranteed. Your guides will take you to suitable fishing areas based on current river conditions, but fish activity can change from day to day.
Yes. The expedition follows a catch-and-release approach to help conserve fish populations and encourage responsible angling.
Previous fishing experience is helpful but not essential. Beginners can participate with guidance from the fishing crew. However, guests should be comfortable spending time outdoors and following river and fishing safety instructions.
Yes. Experienced anglers are welcome to bring their preferred fishing equipment. If you do not want to travel with your own gear, selected equipment may be arranged on request.
The expedition combines fishing with rafting through sections of moving water. The actual difficulty can vary depending on river levels and weather conditions. A professional rafting crew will accompany the expedition and provide safety instructions.
Swimming ability is recommended for a river-based adventure, but participants are provided with appropriate safety equipment and must follow the instructions of the rafting crew. Guests should inform the team of any relevant concerns before departure.
Accommodation during the river section is in riverside camps using expedition tents, mattresses, and sleeping bags. Camps are normally established on suitable riverbanks or sandy beaches.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided during the river expedition. Meals are prepared by the expedition crew and are designed to provide sufficient energy for fishing, rafting, and outdoor activities.
The Bheri corridor passes through natural forest and remote landscapes where birds, monkeys, and other wildlife may be seen. Wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.
The most suitable period generally depends on river conditions, fish activity, weather, and the type of fishing experience you are seeking. Spring and autumn are commonly considered favorable periods for outdoor activities in Nepal, but the exact departure dates should be selected according to current river and weather conditions.
Yes. The Bheri River expedition can be combined with additional days in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bardia National Park, or other destinations in Nepal. We can arrange a tailor-made itinerary around the fishing expedition.
